In the case
of keeping dog, ulama has different opinion in it. The majority of ulama said
that it is not allowed it unless for hunting, security, and others that allow
by sharia. But some of scholar allowed it. The majority of ulama used the
hadith in Sahih Muslim as the base of argument:
Meaning:
whoever petting dog, except the dog for hunting, security (keeping the cattle),
and for farm, the merit is decreasing every day for 2 qirat.
With that
being said, it is also allowed petting the puppy for the purpose of training.
To
summarize, it is allowed to petting the dog as long as there is need in it, but
if it is not, then it disallowed.
