Fatwa: Eating meat slaughtered by Christian and Jews
Explanation:
Islam have
a strict order in the case of the meat that allowed to be consumed to muslim.
This matter caused by the fact that the heathen at that time (musyrik of Arab),
slaughtered their cattle as a sign of worship to their gods. Not only that, but
it also become the principle of their belief, so they slaughtered the animal as
an offering and by their god’s name it was slaughtered. Then Islam come and restrict
such actions. Because of that, by logic muslim of that time also thought that animal
slaughtered by Christian and Jews was also prohibited in Islam. At that time, Muslim
equalized between Christian and Jews (people of the book/ ahl kitab) as the
heathen of Arab in the matter of muamalah because they are not worship Allah as
their god. But then the revelation came and Allah gave the remissions/ concession
to muslim as it mentioned in QS al-Maidah: 5.
ٱلْيَوْمَ
أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتُ ۖ وَطَعَامُ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حِلٌّۭ
لَّكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّۭ لَّهُمْ ۖ وَٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ
وَٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتُ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ إِذَآ
ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ مُحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَـٰفِحِينَ وَلَا
مُتَّخِذِىٓ أَخْدَانٍۢ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ فَقَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُۥ
وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ
Today
all good, pure foods have been made lawful for you. Similarly, the food of the
People of the Book is permissible for you and yours is permissible for them.
And ˹permissible for you in marriage˺ are chaste believing women as well as chaste
women of those given the Scripture before you—as long as you pay them their
dowries in wedlock, neither fornicating nor taking them as mistresses. And
whoever rejects the faith, all their good deeds will be void ˹in this life˺ and
in the Hereafter they will be among the losers.
Not only
that, if we look closely in the verse and also search for the hadits related to
this matter, there are no indication that Allah and the prophet gave us an
order to investigate on how the Christian and Jews slaughtered their meat. In
this case, it is included in the verse that is general (‘am), which mean, any
food and drink (as long as it is not prohibited because of its substance/ haram
li ‘ainihi, such as meat of pig, alcohol, blood, etc) that is served by Cristian
and Jews is allowed for muslim.
Some muslim
trying to argue with the reason that Christians and Jews nowadays are not like
the true people of book in the prophetic era. This argument is invalid, because
according to Islam even in era of prophet Muhmmad, many people of book were
already not true Christian and Jews because they already made changes of their
holy book (bible and torah). But still, islam allow us to have their food.
Some also
tried to argue that the meat slaughtered by people of book is not mention god’s
name in it in the time of slaughter. But again, this is an invalid argument
since there is a hadith telling us that there were sahabah (companion) who get
a meat from non-muslim but did not know whether the cattle slaughtered by the
Allah’s name or not, and then prophet said to recite God’s name and eat it. Wallahu
a’lam bishsawab.
