Fatwa: Eating meat slaughtered with Captive bolt gun/ Stunner
Conclusion:
Allowed. Their method of slaughtering the cattle does not have to be the same
as ours.
Explanation:
In European Union (EU) regulation it is stated that before the process
of slaughter/ bleeding, the cattle have to be stunned so the animals will be

by EU official https://rb.gy/k6oloz ). With that being said, is muslim
allowed to consumed such meat?
In the book of Halal wa al-Haram fi al-Islam (by Yusuf Qardhawi), one
asked “is the method used by Christian and Jews when they slaughtered the
cattle has to be the same as our method (which is cutting/ slashing the throat)?
The answer is no.
Of course, many Islamic scholars take that (cutting the throat) as requirement,
but in Malikiyah madzhab, such method is not an obligation. The verse of the
Quran simply stated “Similarly, the food of the People of the Book is
permissible for you and yours is permissible for them” (QS al-Maidah: 5).
In this verse and also if we read in hadith related to this, Allah and the prophet
do not ask us to find out the method used by people of the book. The verse
simply stated, their food is permissible to us, and our food to them. Of course,
that is as long as the substance of the food is not forbidden to us such as pig
meat and alcohol. In this case, If the animal is slaughtered with the method
that permissible in their religion, and then the food is presented to muslim,
the muslim can eat it. Even tough, their method is not like our method, the
food is still halal. But if the food is killed by the method that is not
permissible in their religion, the food is also forbidden to us.
This brings us the question, is it permissible for muslim to eat the
cattle slaughtered by EU standard using the stunner/ captive bolt as EU method?
The answer is yes. The EU itself is group of countries with Christian as their
majority. Based on that, their meat is good for muslim. In addition to that, the
use of captive bolt or stunner as shown in the video, is not used as main method.
It is just used as a way to make the cattle unconscious so the cattle will feel
no pain when the butcher slash/ cut its throat, which is good for the cattle
itself.
Furthermore, if the meat is imported or slaughtered in the communist
country, this will become problem to muslim. Because it is forbidden (haram) to
muslim because they are not people of the book, even many of them do not believe
in God. Wallahu a’lam.
