Explanation:

The question about the status of alcohol weather it is najis or not, will have an effect on the status of antiseptic and also parfum. If it is najis, then both are not suitable to perform taharah and also shalat. Some scholar said alcohol is najis, but other said otherwise. The group who said najis, argue with Quran Surah al-Maidah verse 90:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌۭ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

Meaning: O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and drawing lots for decisions are all evil of Satan’s handiwork. So, shun them so you may be successful.

In it stated that khamr belong to rijs which many scholars interpret that as najis. There are also hadith that support this opinion. But this verse is the most popular proposition.

Other also used this verse as their base opinion. They said, in those verse it stated that khamr, gambling, azlam (idol), al-anshab (drawing lots for decisions), all used in the same sentence and all of it are rijs. Just like gambling, idol, and drawing lots are not najis, then khamr is also not najis.

According to Rasyid Ridha in al-Manar, alcohol is like nabidz, which is not najis. Alcohol is not the same as khamr. Both are different. In this case, the second opinion are better to be implemented in modern era as many of us use alcohol as antiseptic especially in the medic and also use it as perfume. The status of haram will only make us miserable (haraj) in this life. Wallahu a’lam.
